Combustion Flashcards
What is a fuel?
A fuel is a substance which releases energy when burnt
What is combustion?
Combustion is the chemical name for burning
What gas is essential for burning?
Oxygen
Name the three elements needed for burning
Oxygen, Fuel, and Heat
What is a Hydrocarbon?
A compound made from Hydrogen and carbon
What is complete combustion?
Burning a hydrocarbon in a plentiful supply of oxygen produces carbon dioxide and water
What is incomplete combustion?
When a hydrocarbon is burned in a limited supply of oxygen, carbon monoxide and soot (unburnt carbon) are formed as well as carbon dioxide and water. This is known as incomplete combustion
What are the products of complete combustion?
Carbon Dioxide and Water
What are the products of incomplete combustion?
Carbon Monoxide and Water
