combining vowels are used to connect word parts. the combining vowel is only placed btw
- word root & suffix
- btw two word roots
(splashes / are used to divide the term into its word parts)
combining vowels are NEVER used btw a
prefix & word root
btw a root & a suffix:
if the suffix begins with a consonant, use it.
if the suffix begins with a vowel, don’t use it.
ex:
arthr + -itis = arthritis
arthr + o + itis = arthroitis (WRONG)
always use combining vowels between 2 roots:
gastr+ o + enter + o + -logy= gastroenterology
what’s a combining form?
when the word root + the combining vowel is the combining form
written as root/vowel (ex: cardi/o)
analyze:
dysmenorrhea
dys = abnormal, difficult, or painful
men/o = menstruation
-rrhea = discharge
difficult or painful menstrual discharge
