Pre: Before

What is a Combining Form?
A root with a combining vowel added.
The most common combining vowel is “o”
Combining form to link a word root with a suffix:
Cardi/o (heart) + Logy (suffix that means study of) = Cardiology
When the suffix begins with a vowel, you have to drop the combining vowel:
Ot/o (ear) + Algia (suffix that means pain) = Otalgia
A combining form to link two words roots, even when the second word root begins with a vowel:
Gastr/o (stomach) + enter/o (Intestines) + itis (suffix that means inflammation) = Gastroenteritis
