Combined Science GCSE Flashcards
Combined Science is compulsory and consists of the main three sciences which include: Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Eukaryotes
animal and plants cell which contain their genetic material enclosed within a nucleus
Prokaryotes
bacterial cells which their genetic material is not enclosed within a nucleus and they are much smaller than eukaryotes
Centi
1 centimetre is 1/100th of a metre
Milli
1 millimetre is 1/1000th of a metre
Micro
1 micrometre is 1/1000000th of a metre
Nano
1 nanometre is 1/1000000000th of a metre
Order of Magnitude
every order of magnitude is 10x greater than the one before
One order of magnitude
10x - one zero
Two orders of magnitude
100x - two zeros
Three orders of magnitude
1000x - three zeros
Nucleus
to enclose the genetic material
Cytoplasm
watery solution where chemical reactions take place
Cell Membrane
controls the molecules that can enter and leave the cell
Mitochondria
where aerobic respiration takes place
Ribosomes
sites of protein synthesis
Chloroplasts
contain chlorophyll and the sites of photosynthesis
Cell Wall
made of cellulose which strengthens the cell
Vacuole
filled with cell sap and helps to give the plant cell its shape
Sperm cell
to join with an egg cell, process called fertilisation
Sperm tail
allows to swim towards the egg
Mitochondria in Sperm
provides energy needed for swimming
Enzymes in Sperm
allow the sperm to digest its way through the outer layer of the egg
Nerve Cell
send electrical impulses around the body
Axon
carries the electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
