Combined Loading Flashcards
What types of loads act on a chimney structure?
A distributed axial load due to gravity, and bending loads due to wind.
What loads act on an aeroengine drive shaft?
An axial force from pushing air backwards, a torsional load from rotation, and a bending load from casing deformation.
What loads act on a boat drive shaft?
An axial force from pushing water backwards, and a torsional load from turning through water.
What does the principle of superposition state?
The total effect of combined loads equals the sum of the effects of individual loads applied separately.
What is the equation for bending stress from a UDL?
σ_B = My/I, where y = d/2
What is the equation for torsional shear stress?
τ = Tr/J, where r = d/2
What is the methodology for analysing components or structures under combined loading?
- Identify a 2D element at the location of interest
- Determine stresses from each individual load
- Superpose the stresses to obtain combined stresses
- Use Mohr’s circle to determine principal and max shear stresses
