Columbian Exchange
Vast global exchange that included people, plants, animals, technology, and disease. Began with Columbus.
Conquistador
Name for the Spanish explorers who claimed lands in the Americas for Spain in the 1500’s and 1600’s
Mercantilism
Policy by which a nation sought to export more than it imported in order to build its supply of gold and silver
Capitalism
economic system in which the means of production are privately owned and operated for profit.
Small Pox
Came from Columbian Exchange and its colonies, the West Indies, and Africa in which goods were exchanged for slaves.
Middle Passage
When Africans were packed onto ships and sold. Named “floating coffins”.
Old World
Belonging to or associated with former times. Part of world known before discovery of Americas, specifically Europe.
New World
Western Hemisphere. Discovery of Americas.
Slave
A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. Work excessively hard.
Indentured Servant
Form of debt bondage, esp. in early American colonies used for poor teens.
Christopher Columbus
Italian navigator who discovered the New World in service of Spain while looking for a route to China.
Hernan Cortez
Spanish conquistador who defeated the Aztecs and conquered Mexico.
Francisco Pizarro
Spanish conquistador who conquered the Incans in what is now Peru and founded the city of Lima.
Treaty of Tordesillas
June 7, 1494, divided land outside of Europe between Portugal and Spain.
