Colscaradh Flashcards
We see an image of a traditional, old-fashioned man in the first verse
Feicimid íomhá d’fhear traidisiúnta, seanfhaiseanta sa chéad véarsa.
He wanted a traditional marriage
Theastaigh pósadh traidisiúnta uaidh
He wanted to live in his native area
Ba mhaith leis a bheith ina chónaí ina cheantar dúchais “i nead a chine”
He was really looking forward to a simple married life, to his wife staying at home looking after the children and doing the housework
Bhí sé ag tnúth go mór le saol simplí pósta, lena bhean chéile ag fanacht sa bhaile ag tabhairt aire do na páistí, ag déanamh oibre an tí.
He wanted a cosy house full of happy children
Ba mhaith leis teach teolaí lán de páistí sona
This image is a traditional image
Is íomha traidisiúnta é an íomha seo
We get an image in the second verse of a woman with the opposite opinion to her husband
Faighimid íomhá sa dara véarsa de bhean leis a mhalairt de thuairim óna fear
A big difference can be seen between the woman’s and the man’s desires
Is mór an difríocht atá le feiceáil idir mianta na mná agus an fhir
She imagined they would be working together, sharing the authority between them. She wanted a modern marriage
Shamhlaigh sí go mbeadh siad ag obair le chéile, ag roinnt an údaráis eatarthu. Bhí pósadh nua-aimseartha ag teastáil uaithi.
It’s clear that this woman is a modern woman
Is léir gur bean nua-aimseartha í an bhean seo
Sadness/disappointment can be seen in this poem. There is a sad and disappointing atmosphere in it.
Tá brón / díomá le feiceáil sa dán seo. Tá atmaisféar brónach agus díomách ann.
The man and the woman wanted different things. The man wanted a wife who would be at home looking after the children.
“quote”
Bhí rudaí difriúla ag teastáil ón bhfear agus ón mbean. Bhí an fear ag iarraidh bean chéile a bheadh sa bhaile ag tabhairt aire do na páistí
“aiteas is greann
i dtógáil clainne”
The woman wanted independence and to be equal in the marriage. She wanted to make her own choices.
“quote”
Ba mhaith leis an mbean neamhspleáchas agus a bheith cothrom sa phósadh. Bhí sí ag iarraidh a roghanna féin a dhéanamh.
“taobh den bhríste…
is leath den chíste”
There is sadness/disappointment in the final verse because the couple didn’t get on with each other and they had to separate in the end.
Tá brón/díomá sa véarsa deireanach mar níor réitigh an lánúin le chéile agus bhí orthu scaradh óna chéile sa deireadh.
The love wasn’t as strong as the desires they had
Ní raibh an grá chomh láidir leis na mianta a bhí acu.
