Colorimetry Flashcards

1
Q

What is colorimetry?

A

Colorimetry uses the relationship between colour intensity of a solution and the concentration of the coloured species present.

Q

What is a colorimeter/spectrophotometer used to do?

A

A colorimeter/spectrophotometer is used to measure the absorbance of light which is the complementary colour to the colour of the solution.

3
Q

Describe a calibration graph.

A

A calibration curve must be prepared using solutions of known concentrations (standard solutions). The concentration of the ‘unknown’ solution is determined from its absorbance and by referring to the calibration curve. The concentration in the sample must lie in the straight line section of the calibration graph
