Q

Why are men more prone to color blindness?

A

This is because women are the carrier of the color blindness disorder while men are the suffer. It is actually related to our X-chromosome.
Male has a X-Y chromosome pair.
Female has X-X chromosome pair.

What are rods?

A

Light sensitive cells.

Help us during low level of light.

Q

What are cones?

A

Color sensitive cells.

More useful in bright light.

Q

How do humans perceive color?

A

1) So cones are the ones that are responsible for us humans to detect color.
2) Hence, absence of cones or defective ones will lead to a certain degree of color blindness.

Q

What happens if there are no cones present?

A

The human will see the world in black & white (total color blindness).

Q

What happens if there is only ONE cone present?

Monochromacy

A

The human will only see the shade of grey, black or white (shade of grey blindness).

Q

What is dichromacy?

A

The state of having two types of functioning cone cells. Dichromats can’t distinguish between red and green. Affects 1/4 of the color blind people.

Q

What is Anomalous Tritanomaly?

A

Most common category of color blindness.

All 3 cones are present however, one of them is defective. One of the cones has shifted to another color.

Q

How do chromatic lenses for color blindness work?

A

To compensate for this abnormal overlap response, EnChroma (most popular brand of color blind glasses) lenses contain proprietary optical materials that selectively remove particular wavelengths of light exactly where the overlap is occurring.
The result: more accurate color perception because the brain can now better distinguish red wavelengths from green wavelengths.

Summarize

A

3 cones - normal eyes
2 cones or defective ones - can’t distinguish red and green

What can we learn from this topic?

A

Must have empathy
Know what the user want
Product design is all about empathy
Understand what other people really need/want
