Value
The lightness or darkness of a color
Gradation
A shading technique in which there is a gradual change in value from Light to dark
Blending
A shading technique that shows value without seeing lines
Hue
Another name for a color
Color wheel
A circular diagram of the spectrum used to show the relationships between the colors
Primary colors
These colors form he basis for color theory or color mixing
Secondary colors
A color produced by mixing two primary colors
Tertiary colors
A color formed when a primary color is mixed with adjacent secondary color
Perspective
The illusion of depth and distance created in a work of art
Shape
A 2-D object defined in some way
Form
A 3-D object defined in some way
Horizon line
In perspective drawings it is where the land (or sea) meets the sky
Vanish point
A point at which parallel lines seem to meet
Receding lines
Lines that go to the vanish point
Finishing lines
Lines that finish a 3D form (usually the back form)
Raw clay
Wet, fresh and manageable clay
Leather hard
Clay that is dried enough to be stiff, but it’s still damp enough to accept other pieces

Ware that is ready to be fired

Ware that been fired once

Ware that has been glaze fired

A technique of making scratches in surfaces of the clay

Liquid clay that is used to attach two pieces of clay together (vinegar-water is a type of slip)

A furnace built of heat-resistants material for firing clay

A coating that has been melted onto a clay surface by the use of heat
Wedging
Method of kneading clay to remove all air pockets

Line that defines the outside edge of a shape
Gesture line
Quick, rough line, which captures shape, form, and movement
Pattern
A combination of shapes repeated in a regular arrangement

One object or shape repeated over and over
Caricature
A line drawing presenting a person or action in an exaggerated fashion
Printmaking
The process of designing and producing prints using a printing block
The actual picture the artist makes from a printmaking process
Collograph
A print made from a collage of materials glued onto a printing block

In printing, a piece of thick, flat material, with a design on a surface, used to print repeated impressions of that design
