What type of colors remind us of fire and the sun. They are advancing colors. (Ex.- Red, Orange, Yellow)
Warm colors
What type of colors remind us of water, grass, and trees. They are receding colors. (Ex.- Blue, Green, Violet)
Cool Colors
What type of colors are black, white, gray, brown, tan and beige. They are neither cool nor warm.
Neutrals
What is a hue?
Color name- color in its purist form with no added black, white, gray
What is value?
Relative lightness or darkness of a color
What is a tint?
White has been added to a hue- lightens
What is a shade?
Black has been added to a hue- darkens
What is tone?
Gray has been added to a hue- softens
What is intensity?
Brightness or dullness of a hue. To dull a hue add some of its compliments.
What is color harmony?
Pleasing combination of colors based on their position on the color wheel
Which type of color scheme is based on a single color of the standard color wheel. Simplest color harmony, variation comes from using light and dark shades of the color and adding neutrals; can make a room appear larger and unified?
Monochromatic
Which type of color scheme is based on combining 3 to 5 colors of the color wheel that neighbor each other. They tend to look best when 1 color dominates and smaller amounts of the related colors are used to add accents and interests?
Analogous
Which type of color scheme is based on the use of 2 colors that are exactly opposites on the color wheel; they make each other look brighter and more intense because the contrast; for less contrast, the values and intensities of the 2 colors can be varied?
Complementary
Which type of color scheme is based on one color and the 2 direct neighbors of that color’s opposite; the starting color is usually the dominating color. Ex- red orange would dominate and be accented with blue and green.
Split Complementary
Which color scheme is the combination of 3 colors that are all equidistant on the color wheel; Ex- Red, blue and yellow OR green, orange, and violet; sharp contrast occurs when values are intense; skill is needed to achieve pleasing harmony.
Triadic
