Colonialism and its long-term negative effect on the society Flashcards
How does climate change effect Asia?
- effected immensly
- high social vulnerability and dense population of India –> severe effects of fluts and droughts
What are the men made parts of increasing droughts in India?
1960s - green revolution (Rooker Fellower Foundation)
–> soil fertility
use of ground water –> subsidence - land drops + rise of sea level
What was the Green Revolution and what were its effects?
A project in the 1960s in India trying to improve the agricultural outputs - to fight hunger (example of a** technological fix)**
–> short-term: increased food production
–> dificult to go back to cultivating “traditional” crops because of the soil exploitation - Technological Lock in
- use of HYCV (high yielding crop variety) - very water intense –> use of ground-water –>** subsidence of land**
Social vulnerability in South Asia
is very high
- intersecting vulnerability (gender, social, economic, infrastructure…)
Bengal Delta
- many people effected by cyclones
What effect did the british rule had on property rights and how did that influence the position of women?
The RYTOWARI land reform under the british introduced male individual property rights which had multiple effect on the society and the position of women:
- Since only man could inheret land and take high jobs in imperial bureaucracy the value of having a son over a daughter increased immensly
- this lead to a changing value and intention of the dowrys from “an asset for the bride” to “a price for the groom” –> payment for the “privilege of marrying a man”
How was the land reform under the british colonial rule called?
Rytowari land reform
- creation of male individual property rights
- land property in male hand exclusively
- male peasants solely responsible for taxes
- Indian male became the dominant legal subject
What effects did the colonial city planning have on Indias Metropols in the context of more frequent hazards?
Colonial cities were often build in very risky places (e.g. in the sea, without any protection)
–> They were not thought to be such big, persisting cities and therefore do not the infrastructure to cope with big hazards, nor do they have possibilities for evacuation…
–> extreme high risks
