A

A project in the 1960s in India trying to improve the agricultural outputs - to fight hunger (example of a** technological fix)**
–> short-term: increased food production
–> dificult to go back to cultivating “traditional” crops because of the soil exploitation - Technological Lock in
- use of HYCV (high yielding crop variety) - very water intense –> use of ground-water –>** subsidence of land**

A

The RYTOWARI land reform under the british introduced male individual property rights which had multiple effect on the society and the position of women:

  1. Since only man could inheret land and take high jobs in imperial bureaucracy the value of having a son over a daughter increased immensly
  2. this lead to a changing value and intention of the dowrys from “an asset for the bride” to “a price for the groom” –> payment for the “privilege of marrying a man”

A

Colonial cities were often build in very risky places (e.g. in the sea, without any protection)
–> They were not thought to be such big, persisting cities and therefore do not the infrastructure to cope with big hazards, nor do they have possibilities for evacuation…
–> extreme high risks
