COLONIALISM Flashcards
Name the four greatest colonial powers in 1885
Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy
CONSEQUENCES OF COLONIALISM FOR THE COLONIES:
ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES:
Extractive economy: colonies were mere providers of cheap labour, new markets and cheap raw materials. The economy in the colonies was kept based on the 1st sector, particularly single-crop farming (plantation system) and extraction of minerals. Empires invested very little in the development (=industrialisation) of the colonies and therefore they did not care to open factories there.
SOCIAL: racism, colonised people became second or third class citizens, mere cheap labour or servants with no rights at all (they did not have a say in how their country should be run, of course, except a small elite but who were never considered equal to the colonisers)
POLITICAL: dependence (which has everlasting consequences even today, after decades of being independent) arbitrary new borders drawn at the Congress of Berlin / families and regions divided across these new artificial borders (a result of the Congress of Berlin)
CULTURAL: colonies lost in different degrees their traditions, beliefs and other cultural aspects such as their languages, acquiring the ones of the empire to a large extent
DEMOGRAPHIC:
Growth due to medical advances
The colonies provided colonising countries with cheap raw materials, and they bought finished products. As a result, those who benefited most from their relationship were colonising countries.
CONSEQUENCES FOR COLONIAL EMPIRES:
ECONOMIC
-Easy access to raw materials which benefited industrialisation
-Creation of new markets to sell my manufactured products (the colonies)🡺 trade increases
-Profit obtained from the difference between the price of raw materials (very cheap) and the price of the final product (expensive)
-Development of arms industry
POLITICAL
-Larger territories
-Increase prestige or international influence
-Increasing (ultra)nationalism
-Tensions among the European powers (+US, Japan)
-Arms race (countries will start producing & buying more and more weapons)
….
-1st world war (WWI)
SOCIAL
WEALTH BROUGHT *(demographic consequences since life expectancy increased, infant mortality decreased)
-better diet,
-better health services for all (creation of hospitals…)
-better lifestyle in general
-access to education for all for the 1st time in history:
compulsory education
-creation of public universities (for white men in the beginning)
CULTURAL
-Change in habits: exotic food like tea, curry, fashion,…
-Influence in “western” countries music: blues, rock, reggae, rap… have black roots
-New words from non-European languages
