A

The British East India Company started out focusing on trading. Through the years, they attempted to control trade and their methods involved gaining a great deal of power. They had a military force and actually took over territory in India.

A

o Indian soldiers rebelled against the company in 1857. Immediately after the British government took direct control (rather than the British East India Company).
o British owned nearly 3/5 of the sub continent where as the rest of the land was divided into 550 states

o Those educated in British schools generally wanted independence. However, many were apprehensive and wanted gradual change. They thought certain aspects of western culture would benefit India.

A

o He opposed violence and urged his fellow citizens to gain independence by non-violently refusing to work with government through civil disobedience or “passive resistance.” Boycotts, strikes, and mass demonstrations were his tools.

Why was Gandhi assassinated?

A

o Gandhi was killed by a Hindu who belonged to a political organization whose views differed from Gandhi’s. Gandhi was assassinated due to his viewpoint that Hindus and Muslims should be treated equally and should co-exist. Radical Hindus felt betrayed by these views, and due to Gandhi’s large influence, felt he needed to be eliminated.
