Colonial Period Flashcards
Why it was called colonial period?
The “Colonial Period” is the time from the early 1600s to the late 1700s when European countries, especially England, started and controlled settlements in America.
During this time, people built new towns, followed European ways of life, and made money through farming and trade.
This period included European control and conflicts with Native Americans, shaping what would later become the United States.
Who were the puritans?
The Puritans were a group of people from England in the 1600s who wanted to make their church simpler and focus only on the Bible.
They thought the Church of England had too many fancy traditions, so they wanted to “purify” it, which is why they were called Puritans.
Because they faced trouble for their beliefs in England, many Puritans moved to America to have the freedom to practice their religion in their own way.
They believed in hard work, simple living, and following strict religious rules.
Who were the separatists?
Separatists were a group of people in England in the 1600s who wanted to separate completely from the Church of England because they believed it couldn’t be fixed or “purified.”
Separatists thought the only way to practice their beliefs was to start their own churches.
Many Separatists faced persecution for these ideas, so some moved to places where they could worship freely, including America.
A famous group of Separatists, known as the Pilgrims, settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620 for religious freedom.
William Bradford
William Bradford (1590-1657) was an important leader in early American history.
He was the governor of Plymouth Colony, where the Pilgrims lived after coming to America for religious freedom.
Bradford wrote a book called Of Plymouth Plantation, which tells the story of how the Pilgrims settled in North America, what life was like for them, and the challenges they faced.
His writing helps us understand what life was like for the Pilgrims and why they came to the “New World” (America).
Plymouth Colony
Plymouth Colony was one of the first English settlements in North America. It was started by a group of people called the Pilgrims, who sailed on a ship called the Mayflower in 1620. They settled in an area that is now part of Massachusetts.
The Pilgrims wanted to practice their religion freely, which is why they left England.
Life was very hard in Plymouth Colony at first, but the Pilgrims got help from Native Americans, which helped them survive and grow their settlement.
The Pilgrims
The Pilgrims were a group of people from England who wanted to practice their religion freely.
They were called “Separatists” because they wanted to separate from the Church of England, which was the main church in their country.
At that time, it was very hard for people to follow different religions in England, and the Pilgrims faced punishment for their beliefs.
