Dominions
Imperial colonies of settlement that were governed by their own elected representatives e.g. Australia
Crown Colonies
A colony directly ruled by an appointee of the British crown (e.g. governor) and accountable to the Colonial Office
Informal Empire
Areas influenced (if not ruled) by the British via deals with local rulers
Protectorate
Areas not ruled directly but where Britain often acted as protector for the country’s ruler using military power
Economic situation after the war
Due to the change in Britain’s trade pattern many export markets were lost to competitors. Japan replaced Britain as biggest textile exporter.
Why was Britains Naval power declining
Funding fell between 1919 and 1921 from 334 million to 84 million. No modernisation or mechanisation in the army.
