Colony
An area or country occupied by settlers from another, often distant, country and ruled or controlled by that home country
Exports
Goods produced within a country to be sold to other countries
Mercantilism
trading for profit by producing and shipping more exports to increase a country’s wealth
Indentured servants
Workers who signed a contract to work for a number of years to pay off debt, often their passage to the colonies
Transatlantic slave trade
system of trade taking millions of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to the American colonies
Port city
A city where ships dock to load or unload goods for transport
Plantation
An estate designed for large-scale farming using resident slave labor
Cash crops
Products for commercial profit, not for use or consumption by the producer
