What are indications of colotomy and what is the major contraindication?
Indications - intraluminal obstructions
ONLY do in viable bowel
What is cranial rectal stenosis?
Stricture of rectal wall at pelvic inlet.
Affects all layers except serosa
What are clinical signs of cranial rectal stenosis?
Constipation, tenesmus, haemotochezia.
How do we treat rectal prolapse?
Reduction if viable.
Do colopexy
Remicaine cream to stop tenesmus
When would you use an anal sacculectomy?
Anal sac disease
What does an anal sacculectomy involve? What happens if you do not complete it properly?
Removal of entire sac and duct.
Do not damage N. rectalis caudalis (permanent incontinence).
Remove entire anal sac or you get chronic fistulation.
Is rectal/anal neoplasia more common in males or females?
Males
But more malignant cases in females
What is the most common rectal tumour in dogs?
Adenomatous polyps
But is benign! Yay!
