Collision Theory Flashcards
What is Collision Theory?
The theory of chemical reactions that describes how particles must collide with enough energy to react.
The rate of a reaction depends on…
The rate of successful collisions between reactant particles. The more successful collisions there are, the faster the rate of reaction.
Name four factors that affect the rate of a reaction
The rate of reaction depends on the temperature and concentration of the reactants, catalysts and the surface area of any solid reactants.
What is a catalyst?
Catalysts increase the rate of a reaction without being changed themselves by the end of the reaction.
What is ‘activation energy’
The energy required to get a reaction started.
Why does increasing the temperature increase the rate of a chemical reaction?
More particles have sufficient energy / activation energy so more collisions will be successful.
How does surface area affect reaction rate?
Smaller sized particles (of the same mass) have greater surface area so higher chance of collisions.
State three ways to measure the rate of a chemical reaction.
- How long it takes for a precipitate to form 2. How long it takes for a mass to change 3. The volume of gas produced during a given time interval.
