College Vocabulary Flashcards
Secondary Schooling
is the stage of education following primary education. The next stage of education is usually college or university. Secondary education is characterized by transition from primary education for minors to tertiary, “post-secondary”, or “higher” education for adults.
Postsecondary Schooling
is the education level that follows the successful completion of secondary education, often referred to as high school. Postsecondary education includes universities and colleges, as well as trade and vocational schools.
Baccalaureate Program
is a high school program that doubles as a highly respected college prep curriculum. The IB program encourages students to think broadly, beyond the boundaries of their communities, and to see themselves as members of a global society.
Postbaccalaureate Studies
is a program completed after graduation from college. Students can enroll in a post-baccalaureate program with a variety of goals: to complete a second BA/BS degree, to attain a graduate certificate, or to complete prerequisite courses for admission into medical school or other graduate programs. Most post-baccalaureate programs take one to two years to complete.
Graduate School
A graduate school (sometimes shortened to grad school) is a school that awards advanced academic degrees (master’s and doctoral degrees) with the general requirement that students must have earned a previous undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree.
Postgraduate School
someone who is studying any form of postgraduate education and someone who is currently engaged in a degree/diploma of any kind after completing a Bachelor’s degree.
College
an educational institution or establishment, in particular one providing higher education or specialized professional or vocational training.
University
an educational institution designed for instruction, examination, or both, of students in many branches of advanced learning, conferring degrees in various faculties, and often embodying colleges and similar institutions.
Technical College
a college providing courses in a range of practical subjects, such as information technology, applied sciences, engineering, agriculture, and secretarial skills.
Community College
a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area.
Apprenticeship
the position of an apprentice.
Internship
the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without pay, in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification.
Certification
the action or process of providing someone or something with an official document attesting to a status or level of achievement.
Vocation
a strong feeling of suitability for a particular career or occupation.
Avocation
a hobby or minor occupation.
Career
an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.
Job
a paid position of regular employment.
