What does academic writing usually require?
A third-person focus. Removes yourself from writing and broadening the audience appeal.
Purpose:
The reason the writer composes the essay
Audience:
The individual or group whom the writer tends to address
Tone
The attitude the writer conveys about the essay’s subject
Reasons for writing:
(Academic settings) To summarize, to analyze, to synthesize, to evaluate
When paraphrasing:
You must cite
Thesis
provides a specific focus and suggest how essay will be organized, A strong thesis is specific, precise, forceful, confident, and is able to be demonstrated
An effective paragraph contains three main parts:
A topic sentence, body, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence.
When writing, use the 5WH:
Who, what, where, when, why, how
Comma Examples:
My sister’s name is Miranda, and my brother’s name is Austin. (Before a coordinating conjunction that introduces an independent clause)
Comma Ex:
Tori ran, fast, and got home before her mother. (use commas to emphasize an adverb)
Comma Ex:
I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on Valentine’s Day.
Comma Ex:
“I’m eight years old,” John said, “and I’m in the third grade.”
Comma Ex:
To omit words: I ordered chicken; Amanda, fish.
Comma Ex:
I was born on Thurs, Dec. 27, 1996, in Boston.
Comma Ex:
Use commas before and after appositives: Our principal, the boogeyman, was fat.
Quotes Ex:
“There’s a worm in my bed,” yelled Becca.
Quotes Ex:
“I’m a slut,” Kwan said, “yes I am.”
Quotes Ex:
Kate said, “I love rocks.”
Quotes Ex:
Kate said, “Hello,” and I asked, “What’s up?”
