College Algerbra Flashcards
Polya’s Problem Solving Techniques
1) Understand Problem 1st (w/o understanding) Read problem twice collect information determine what is being asked 2) Devise a plan eg'n (self created) draw a picture look for patterns 3) Carry-out plan
4) Check Answer is my answer reasonable? did I include units? Note: "I know it a rational expression" "I know its a restricted domain" "I know the LCD"
1.1 Solve the following rational eg’n:
4/3x = 2/1 - 3/x
restricted domain/x LCD: 3x 3x(4/3x) = 3x (-3/x) 4 = 6x - 9 13 = 6x x = 13/6
Solve by using the Multiplication Method:
1/t-4 = 2t/t sq root 2 - 16
restrictive domain:
t = 4, t = -4
4 = t only potential sol’n but it is a “restricted domain value” NO SOL’n
Perimeter = 2L + 2L + 2W + 2W
Perimeter: 112 = h + 3h + h + 3h 112 = 8h 14 = h width 3h = 42
Triangles: all angles sum to 180 degrees:
triangles shows angle x zero power, 37 degrees and ?
Answer:
180 - x - 37
Quadratic Eq’ns have the form
ax square + bx + c = 0
aka: quadratic formula
a,b,c are real numbers (real #’s are anything that doesn’t have a “i” (imaginary) attached to it.
Solve quadratic Eqn’s by four methods?
1) Zero Property (factoring)
2) Square root property
3) Quadratic Formula (always work)
4) Completing the Square
