College Algebra Flashcards
What is a set?
A collection of objects whose contents can be clearly determined. They can be represented in many different ways.
What is a Universal Set?
A general set that contains all the elements under discussion. (ex. All the students in the class right now 1,2,3,4,5, etc.)
What are subsets?
Each set has to have shared numbers, every single element of one of the sets has to be in the other one to be a subset. (Set A is a subset of Set B. )
What is an empty set?
A set that contains no elements.
What is a compliment in operation of sets?
(The compliment of set A, is A’.) The compliment exists as a set of all the elements in the universal set that are NOT in set A.
What is an Intersection in operations on sets?
( A upside down U B) The intersection of the sets are all of the elements that both sets share.
What is a union in operations on sets?
(A U B) The union set is combining all of the elements of both set A and set B together, to make one set.
What are three different types of solutions when solving linear equations?
One solution, no solutions, infinite number of solutions
What does solving a linear equation mean?
it means finding the set of values that make the inequality true when solving with that value.
When do we flip the inequality sign in a equation?
When we multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number.
What is the solution set written as an inequality?
ex: x<7
What is the solution set written as an interval?
ex. (-oo,7)
What letter represents the slope?
The letter m
What is the equation to find the slope of a function with points?
y2-y1
x2-x1
If the slope equals zero what is it called?
Undefined
