Collective Ministerial Responsibility^ Flashcards
What is CMR?
if in the cabinet, the ministers have to act in support of PM
convention
- not legally binding
Examples of CMR Being Positive
MP being called out for being racist
BJ scrutinising TM but she kept him in so he doesn’t do it more openly
Why is CMR important?
if a gov loses a vote of no confidence, their whole gov must resign
- Callaghan in 1979, lost 310 to 311
it maintains unity, if not then PM’s authority decreases
Stops MPs from criticising the PM too much
Robin Cook
2003
disagreed with Tony Blair’s invasion of Iraq
- resign for morals, not politics
did not have a significant impact
- TB didn’t resign nor stop the invasion (still had majority support)
David Davis
he resigned, didnt believe in May’s Brexit plan
- giving away too much, too easily
thought the UK wont leave
Boris Johnson Resigning in May’s Gov
he didn’t agree with her Brexit plan
it would leave the UK in “a state of a colony”
he released his resignation before Downing Street could approve it to weaken May more
