2) label container
3) position patient
4) give specimen container to patient but do not touch inside
5)instruct patient to inhale deeply, breathe out and cough hard
6) repeat to allow pulmonary secretions to move into airway
7)have patient to only spit sputum and not saliva
8) put lid on and fill out requisition form and send to lab

collection of fecal specimen

A

1) identify patient and explain procedure
2) label vials (you may have 2 or 3 vials)
3) obtain specimen
4) fill one vial at a time
5) do not fill past the fill line
6) collect from areas that are slimy, bloody, and watery
7) if feces is hard, collect from both ends and the middle
8) collect all necessary vials
9) if 3rd vial is included in kit but not ordered for collection, collect sample anyway but do not mix
10) shake vials until liquid and stool are mixed
11) fill out requisition form and send to lab
