collection of data Flashcards
What is raw data
Data that has just been collected. It is unprocessed and needs to be cleaned, ordered grouped and rounded
What is qualitative data
Non numerical data such as gender
what is quantitative data
numerical data, like height. Can be measured with numbers
What is discrete data
Data that only takes particular values eg. number of people
What is continuous data
Data that can take any value eg. height, arm span
What is categorical data? And what sort of data is it used for?
Data that can be sorted into non-overlapping categories such as gender, used for qualitative data so that it can be processed more easily.
What is ordinal data
Ranked. Quantitative Data that can be given an order or ranked on a scale. Like marks in an exam.
What is Bivariate data
Involves measuring 2 variables. Can be qualitative or quantitative, grouped or ungrouped. Usually
used with scatter diagrams where the two axes represent the two different variables. One variable is often
called the explanatory variable and the other the response variable.
What is multivariate data
Multivariate – Made up of more than 2 variables e.g. comparing height, weight, age and shoe size together
How is discrete data grouped
Into non-overlapping class intervals. They do not have to have equal class width
How is continuous data grouped
Using inequalities, the numbers must not be overlapping
What are the pros and cons of grouping data
Pros
easy to read and understand
easy to spot patterns and compare data
cons
Loses accuracy of data as you no longer know exact data values.
Calculations made from these will only be an estimate e.g. mean.
What is primary data
Data you have collected yourself or someone has collected on your behalf
What is secondary data
Data that has already been collected
