Figurative Language: creates comparisons by linking the senses and the concrete to abstract ideas
Example: Simile, metaphor, hyperbole
Fortune’s Fool: bring the idea of fate and destiny back into the audience’s mind.
Example: Romeo, defending himself against Tybalt
Tragic Hero: a character in a dramatic tragedy who has virtuous and sympathetic traits but ultimately meets with suffering or defeat
Example: Aristotle’s Characteristics of a Tragic Hero. Aristotle was famous for classifying the characteristics of a classic tragic hero.
Foil: prevent from succeeding
Example: John sabotaged Aaron’s baseball glove before districts.
Pun: a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.
Example: The duck said to the waiter, put it on my bill
Dramatic Irony: the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
