Collecting Data Flashcards
What are the explanatory and response variables?
- Explanatory - variable manipulated (x-axis)
2. Response - variable measured/outcome (y-axis)
What is a laboratory experiment?
Experiment conducted in a controlled environment
What are the adv/disadvantages of a lab experiment?
- Easy to replicate
- Can control extraneous variables
- Ppts may behave differently in test conditions
What is a field experment?
Carried out in the ppt’s everyday environment
What are the adv/disadvantages of a field experiment?
- More likely to reflect real-life behaviour
2. Can’t control extraneous variables
What is a natural experiment?
Carried out in the ppt’s everyday environment, but the researcher has NO control over any variables
What are the adv/disadvantages of a natural experiment?
- More likely to reflect real-life behaviour
2. Lack of control over extraneous variables = can’t replicate exactly
What is a control group?
Group that doesn’t receive treatment and is used for comparison against the test group
What is an outlier?
Anomalous data value that does not fit the pattern of the data
Why might you ignore or include an outlier?
- IGNORE: due to a measuring or recording error
- IGNORE: not typical
- INCLUDE: it’s a genuine result
How do we clean data?
- Identify and either correct or remove inaccurate data value
- Remove units/symbols from data
- Decide what to do about the now missing data
What are extraneous variables?
Variables that we are not investigating but could still affect the results of an experiment
