non-cellular portion of tissue that provides structural support and affects the development of biochemical function of cells

triple-helix proteins that form most of fibrils in ECM

Structural polysacchrides in the ECM
composed of repeating disaccharide
What is Hyaluronic acid?
non-sulfated GAG.
proteoglycans are linked to hyluronic acid to form giant molecules most excellent lubricators and/or shock absorbers
where do we find Type I collagen?
Skin, tendon, bone, annulus of intervertebral disk

Articular cartilage, vitreous humor, nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disk
