Cold Worked Tool Steels Flashcards
Name the 3 sub types of cold worked steel
-3A Oil hardening
-3B air hardening
-3c high carbon high chromium
(3A) What are the characteristics of?
-high machinability
-Low red hardness
-resists cracking on quenching
(3A) what can this steel not be used for?
-oil hardened cannot be used for high speed cutting as the material will distort at temperatures approx higher than 200 degrees
General characterisation for cold worked tool steels?
-high wear resistance
-high abrasion
-high toughness
-high impact resistance
(3B) applications of air steels?
-blanking and forming dies
-intricate shapes due to little change after heat treat and quench
In the order from best to worst, list the quenching methods
-Water
-Oil
-Air
Applications of High carbon, high chromium ?
-Tube rolling mandrels
-blanking and piercing dies
How are high carbon, high chromium steels cooled?
-usually by air but sometimes oil
