COLD: Weathering and Erosional Processes Flashcards
1
Q
What is freeze thaw weathering?
A
Water in cracks in rocks becomes ice and expands the crack, crumbling the rock.
2
Q
What is chemical weathering?
A
If the bedrock consists of carbonate rocks, it can be weathered by acidic meltwater?
3
Q
What is plucking?
A
Ripping out of material from the bedrock. The more broken the bedrock, the more freeze-thaw there has been previously, so the more effective plucking becomes. Occurs mainly at base of glacier or sides.
4
Q
What is abrasion?
A
Erosion of the bedrock by material carried by the glacier. Larger and more angular load, more potential for erosion. Coarser material will scrape, scratch and groove the rock, finer materials smooth the rock.
