Marshall Plan
US program of economic aid to European countries to help them rebuild after WW2
Cold War
state of diplomatic hostility between US & USSR following after WW2
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
-a defensive military alliance formed by 10 W. Euro nations, US, and Canada
Warsaw Pact
a military alliance formed by the USSR & 7 eastern Euro. countries
Red Guards
militia units formed by young Chinese people in response to Mao Zedong’s call for a social/cultural revolution
Cultural Revolution
uprising in China led by Red guards, with the goal of est. a society of all equal peasants & workers
Communism
economic system in which all means of production and goods are all shared equally/government owned
Democracy
system of government by the whole population, typically through elected representatives
Brinkmanship
policy threatening to go to war in response to any enemy aggression
Mao Zedong
communist leader, believed revolution will solve China’s problems
Jiang Jieshi
promised democracy & political rights to all Chinese
Commune
in communist China, a collective farm on which a great number of people work & live together
