what was the refugee crisis?
east germans fled to the west through berlin because they didn’t like life under communism.
how many germans left east germany during the refugee problem?

what was khrushchev ultimatum and when was it?
he threatened that unless they left west berlin and allowed berlin to become a ‘free state’ then he would hand over control of all routes into berlin to east germany.

didn’t cone to any agreements and relations remained tense.
what was concluded from the camp david summit?
showed leaders were able to cooperate and khrushchev agreed to further negotiations.

less then 2 weeks before the paris summit, an american u2 spy plane was shot down over the USSR. 1960
what happened after the U2 crisis in Paris?
Khrushchev demanded an apology however Eisenhower refused and the summit was cancelled.
Who was at the vienna summit? and what year was it?
new president JFK and Khushchev in 1961.
what happened at the Vienna summit?
kennedy proved to be tougher then Khrushchev thought. Kennedy refused to remove US troops from west berlin and instead increased defence spending. it was clear western allies were not going to budge on berlin.

what was the situation with checkpoint charlie?
the usa disputed the rights of soviet troops to patrol the checkpoints in the wall and to check the passports of American officials who passed through. the USA moved tanks up to ‘checkpoint charlie’. soviets moved their own tanks within 200m of the americans.
how was the situation at checkpoint charlie resolved?
both sides negotiated and removed their troops.

as it is only 90 miles away from the coast of florida, by the 1950’s the USA controlled most of Cubas industry.

Batista. supported by americans.
what was life like under the rule of batista? (3 things)
the secret police carried out wide scale violence, torture and public execution. foreigners owned 70% of farm land. america mafia run drug, gambling and prostitution gangs.
