the usa disputed the rights of soviet troops to patrol the checkpoints in the wall and to check the passports of American officials who passed through. the USA moved tanks up to ‘checkpoint charlie’. soviets moved their own tanks within 200m of the americans.

The event was damaging to the USA’s reputation. Cuba no longer wanted a diplomatic relationship with the USA. Khrushchev claimed the failure of the invasion was a success for communism. Cuba became closer to the Soviet Union
Castro publicly announced that he was a communist.

A

October 1962, a U-2 spy-plane took photographs of missile launch pads in Cuba. Intelligence informed Kennedy that approaching Soviet ships could be carrying ballistic missiles to Cuba.
