Who took over Russia from the Tsars?
Bolsheviks - had to fight civil war to stay in power
What happened in 1919 to tackle the Bolsheviks?
USA, Britain and France sent troops to help opponents of Bolsheviks .
What did the USA set up after WW1?
A League of Nations. France and Britain main leaders after USA didn’t join.
Why was the Soviet Union excluded from the League of Nations?
Other capitalist nations refused to recognise its communist government.
What happened in Germany in 1933?
Hitler became leader
What did Hitler hate?
Communism - made it clear he wanted to expand east into Soviet Union.
How did Stalin try to protect his country from Hitler?
Form an alliance with Britain and France but countries didn’t want to form - seen as western support for Hitler.
What happened in 1938 Germany?
Threatened to invade Czechoslovakia.
What did Germany’s 1938 threat lead to?
Munich conference in September. Czechoslovakia on USSR border but Stalin not invited to conference.
What was formed in 1939?
Germany and Soviet Union signed Nazi-Soviet Pact.
What was the Nazi-Soviet Pact?
Split Poland in half and allowed both to gain land with no fighting.
Why did the Nazi-Soviet Pact shock Britain?
Britain had guaranteed Poland’s independence - unwilling to fight Germany without USSR help.
What did Britain do when Germany invaded Poland?
Declared war - Chamberlain had tried to avoid this in 1930s)
