describe the led up of the Berlin crisis
After ww2 and the division of Germany into east and west. There were many problems within the eastern Germany which made it incredibly unpopular eg refugee problems … which forced people to leave to western Germany which was seen that citizens enjoyed greater freedom and wealth.
Between 1949 and 1961 2.7million refugees fled to west Germany. Many people escaped through Berlin and then it was easy to move to western Germany.
Khrushchev was worried as it showed that people preferred capitalist west instead of communist east. And then in November 1958 declared in his ultimatum that the whole of Berlin belonged to east Germany. He also issued an ultimatum to give US troops 6months to withdraw.
