17
Q

Why did divisions occur between the KMT + Communists

A

Jiang was more conservative , he thought that the communists were becoming too powerful

Communists were seizing + redistributing land to the peasantry

Jiang began a purification process , removing the communist threat

18
Q

Why did China experience Civil War ?

A

KMT promised land reforms that they could not achieve

Thousands of the peasantry were communists

Jiang had a lack of control

KMT has 0 support from the peasants

Communists seized land and gave it to the poor

Military strategies
Mao’s leadership

This allowed the CCP to develop in the country side

They damaged Jiang’s reputation , he refused to work with the CCP against Japan

21
Q

How did the CCP’s appeal to the peasantry affect China ?

A

Mao appealed to the peasantry more than Jiang did as he was a peasant

Communist appeal of wealth distribution was liked by the poor

22
Q

How did Jiang’s loss of middle class support affect China ?

A

KMT employed corrupt bureaucrats who served in unpopular regimes

The KMT secret police contradicted the democratic government which was portrayed

Unsuccessful economic policy Lost Middle class support as hyperinflation occurred . Leading to heavy taxation on lower class homes

23

A

Generals were corrupt . They sold food on the black market

Hundreds of thousands deserted due to low morale

His army was very corrupt

24
Q

How did Jiang’s strategy and generals affect China ?

A

Made frequent and crucial errors . Jiang ignored any advice of danger from his generals .

He was always suspicious of successful generals , yet he was not aware of the CCP spies relaying info back to Mao

The CCP as a result knew all of their moves

25
Q

How did the Communist military performance affect China ?

A

Mao’s 8 rules ensured that the CCP’s soldiers had better relations with the peasants .

Soviets helped the CCP acquire Japanese weapons after their surrender

Truman knew that full military intervention would be the only thing that could save Jiang

32
Q

Why did the US adopt the defensive perimeter strategy ?

A

In order to :

Protect trade
Stop Communism
Protect model states
Make up for US military weaknesses
Attack Communist China
To do everything much cheaper

33
Q

How did the Defensive perimeter protect trade ?

A

The area where it was being built had economic cross roads of the Indian and Pacific oceans

Asian markets provided 90% of the worlds rubber . 60% of its tins and essential raw materials

34
Q

How did the defensive perimeter strategy help stop Communism and help spread Democracy ?

A

America established military bases on islands to act as a buffer , similar to the USSR buffer zones

They know that they have to protect Korea / Syngman Rhee was a puppet leader of Korea - so the US had to give him lots of funding to try and maintain Capitalism

35
Q

How did the defensive perimeter strategy help protect model states ?

A

Kenan’s supporters persuaded MacArthur to plan a defensive perimeter across all of Asia

Kenan saw places like Okinawa as important for control of ports in north east Asia where amphibious attacks could be launched

The DPS became a widely accepted policy as the CIA stressed that keeping offshore islands were safe and will allow access of raw materials

36
Q

How did the defensive perimeter strategy help make up for US military weaknesses ?

A

The US aimed to avoid having troops deployed on mainland Asia by building a defensive wall against Soviet aggression in the pacific

The generals saw it as a low cost defensive line in the event of a war by relying on it instead of requesting higher funding or forces

They tripled their military spending - as they needed to invest in the navy so they can target/defend all of the small pacific islands

37
Q

How did the defensive perimeter strategy help the US attack Communist China ?

A

Kenan saw Okinawa as a strong point of control to send an amphibious attack to the mainland of Asia - including military bases on near by islands

38
Q

Did the defensive perimeter strategy change over time ?

A

Yes - it geographically grew to Taiwan , Korea and Indochina . Militarily it became more interventionalist

No - the fundamental purpose remained the same to protect US trade interests

No - At the end of the Vietnam war the US remained in its chain of military bases

39
Q

What was NSC 68 - 1950 ?

A

The 68th briefing of the national security council

The NSC was a strategy to deter Communism - this was unknown by China , North Korea and the USSR

The content was a tool to persuade US officials to take the threat of Communism seriously . Harsh words like “the destruction of America” were used to shock politicians who were on the fence to agree with them .

Investment in the military tripled and the policy towards Asia also changed
