This was created in 1955.

U2 spy planes spotted Soviet missiles heading to Cuba. Kennedy decides on quarantine/ blockade.

Khrushchev backed down but US had to remove missiles from Turkey both sides claimed victory & hotline between US and the USSR was established.

A

He was a corrupt communist leader of Czechoslovakia in the mid-1960s who called for reforms for less state control

A

Novotny was replaced by Alexander Dubcek in January 1968.

Introduced political and economic reforms known as ‘Socialism with a human face’. Dubcek pledged total loyalty to the Warsaw Pact. More reforms followed known as ‘The Prague Spring’

A

Moscow seemed to accept the reforms but was under pressure from other Warsaw Pact leaders to clampdown on Dubcek fearing their own countries might rebel and also want reforms.

There were military exercises on the Czech border to intimidate Dubcek.

Brezhnev met Warsaw Pact leaders without Dubcek.

When did Soviet forces enter Czechoslovakia and what happened?

A

On the 20th of August 1968 Soviet forces enter Czechoslovakia and seize control of Prague.

Dubcek told the army to not to fight back. 100 protesters killed, 500 wounded & reforms were reversed. Because of this leader was exiled not executed.

Dubcek was replaced.

The Prague Spring is the term used for the brief period when the government of Czechoslovakia wanted to democratise the nation and reduce the control the USSR had on the country.

This happened in 1968.

A

In October 1956. Student protests demanded the removal of hard-line leader Rakosi.

They wanted:
- The return to Nagy, a reformer (leader)
- Withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country
- Removal of some of the restrictions & oppression.

A

The withdrawal of the Soviet troops from the country. In response Soviet tanks fired on protesters. Soviet tanks left Budapest 30 October 1956.

A

Khrushchev feared other countries would follow and leave the Warsaw Pact, so tanks were sent back to crush the revolution. Two weeks of bitter fighting followed 3000 deaths & 200,000 fled to Austria before the border was closed. Nagy was executed, replaced by Janos Kadar.
