The Treaty of Friendship was signed between USSR & newly communist China in 1950.

The USA and its allies refused to acknowledge the new Chinese government, insisting that their remaining nationalists on Taiwan should be China’s representative at the UN. The USSR boycotted the UN in protest in 1950.

The USSR provided weapons and equipment to the north but was reluctant to provide troops.

With UN support, led by the USA under General MacArthur, the South pushed the north back to the border known as the 38th parallel.

The Warsaw Pact was the Soviets version of NATO made-up 7 Eastern European countries + USSR.
This was created in 1955.
This gave the USSR more direct control over the militaries of other countries.

In 1957 the first Soviet satellite named Sputnik was sent to space. This was a huge technological victory for the USSR even though the first Sputnik didn’t work.

In May 1960, a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Soviet Air Defence Forces while conducting photographic aerial reconnaissance deep inside Soviet territory
