What was the Cold War?
war between America and all the communist countries
What are proxy wars?
a war instigated by a major power that does not itself become involved in the war
what was the tension building between Russia and America?
-stalin upset bc during ww2 germany killed 18 million russians and America didn’t do anything ab it when they were allies
-stalin learned we were keeping the nuclear bomb secret and sent spies to copy the plans
-both disagreed on gov./economics dealing with Europe it was split in half between communist and capatalist
who were the key players during the cold war?
-American president Harry Truman
-Soviet union Dictator Joseph Stalin
What was the Yalta Conference?
-during ww2 and stalin was taking over country by country trying to inch towards hitler and America wasn’t ok with this so stalin said they’d have a free election to decide whether the countries wanted to be capitalist or communist
What was the Potsdam conference?
-U.S and soviets have anthoer meeting, and (soviets know abt the a-bombs America is secretly building) and stalin asked America if we were and we lied and said no so stalin continued to spy on us
what were the names of the two spies caught stealing the a-bomb plans?
-Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
What did the soviet union do after WW2?
-stalin’ rigged all elections (free elections)
-killed, bribed, jailed ppl who were against communism
What is the United Nations?
-America and the Soviet Union argued over how to rebuild Europe and others had to decide between the two.
What is the Truman Doctrine?
-Containment
-wanted to prevent communism from influencing other countries
-FIRST TEST places were Turkey and Greece
-gave them $400 million and military aid
-this worked and America was very successful
