Cold Environments Flashcards
What is a cold environment
An area of land always covered by ice. It may have glaciers, ice sheets and frozen rock or soil.
Is there a cold environment on every continent
Yes
What is the zone of accumilation
Where there are inputs into the glacial budget.
What might happen in the zone of ablation
Melting due to temperature ise
What is plucking
Melt water from a glacier freezes to the rock. When the ice moves downhill, rock is taken from
the back wall
What is freeze thaw weathering
When melt water or rain gets into cracks in the bedrock. At night the water freezes, expands and causes the crack to get larger. Eventually the rock will break away.
What is abrasion
When rocks which have frozen to the base and the back of the glacier scrapes the bedrock.
What is glacial budget
Glaciers are a system with inputs, processes and outputs.
Summarise the formation of a corrie
- snow falls into a no th facing hollow on the side of a mointain
- it freezes and fo ms a glacier as the glacier moves downhill, it uses abrasion, plucking and freeze-thaw weathe ing to erode the hollow
- mate ial builds up at the front of the glacier which is called a moraine. the glacier melts in the hollow and fo ms a ta n
Glaciated valleys have a clear shape that tells us ice has moved through it. Which shape is it?
U shaped valleys with steep sides, a wide valley floor. It flows in a straight shape
