What is Beck’s cognitive triad
A
- Depression is caused by three thought patterns
- Caused by bad experiences
- Leads to negative self- schema (belief system is negative)
- Negative view of self —> Negative view of the world ——-> Negative view of the future

What is Ellis’s ABC model
A
- Three stages which cause us to develop a negative thinking pattern
- Activating Event —–> Beliefs (irrational or rational) —-> Consequence (Positive or Negative response)

Strengths:
A
- Takes into account the events in a person’s life
- Has been used in CBT, reduces irrational thoughts and reduces need of antidepressants

Weaknesses:
A
- Difficult to tell whether irrational thoughts are a cause or a symptom of depression
- Some types of depression cannot be explained by thinking patterns
