3) cognitive behavioural model (Gardner and Bemis)

+ EVAL: methodological limitations

A
  • garner and Bemis realised AN patients may have multiple common characteristics. Tend to be high achieving introverted perfectionists who have high self doubt
  • combined w culture they form ideas of importance of weight. Weight loss becomes self-reinforcing and an accomplishment, then they become scared of food and may isolate themselves
EVAL: theories such as Gardner and Becis over rely on self report technique. For example, it’s assumed that pre-existing cognitions about weight can be revealed verbally, ppl aren’t always open

4) fairburn et al

- transdiagnostic / stages of food restriction

A
  • underlying cause is overestimating body weight (their self asteem is governed by eating control rather than general achievement)
Tis causes eating control to become important
    Stages:
    1) enhanced self control (increased self asteem not eating is positive reinforcement)
    2) psychological changes caused by starvation perceived as failure to control
    3) due to focus on weight, they increase monitoring
