Cognitive Psychology Flashcards
What is the definition of Cognitive psychology?
Cognitive psychology is the study of mental processes such as perception, decision-making and memory.
The principle belief of Cognitive psychology is that “if we wish to understand why an individual acts the way they do, we must understand how the individual thinks, remembers and reasons”.
What is one of Cognitive major applications?
Cognitive psychology has modified the ‘orthodox’ learning theory, resulting in two major theories becoming prominent, these are:
- Cognitive behaviourism.
- Social learning theory.
What is the information-processing approach?
The cognitive approach applies the belief that our mental processes are an information-processing system.
That means that we are exposed to raw data, and our brain has various mechanisms to intake, format and store to then redistribute this information.
An example of this is how we look at an object, we remember it’s characteristics and we can then describe it.
