Cognitive Psychology Flashcards
What is the role of the central executive?
It focuses and divides our limited attention, monitors incoming information, makes decisions and allocates it to a slave subsystem. Information is not stored.
What is the role of the phonological loop?
Deals with auditory information including sounds and language.
What are the two subsystems of the phonological loop and their roles?
Phonological store: stores information
Articulatory system: Acts as an inner voice and allows maintenance rehearsal (eg. repeating sounds in a loop)
What is the visuo-spatial sketchpad and explain its role.
stores visual and/or spatial information.
eg. if you were given directions it imagines the route in your head.
What are the subsystems of the visuo-spatial sketchpad, and explain their roles.
Visual Cache: Stores images
Inner Scribe: Records the arrangements of objects
What is the capacity of the visuo-spatial sketchpad and who proved it with a study?
3 - 4 items.
Proved by Baddeley’s experiment.
What is the Episodic Buffer and when was it added to the WMM?
It is a temporary store that maintains a sense of time sequencing recording of events. It was added in 2000.
What is the episodic buffer’s capacity?
4 chunks
Who developed the Working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch
Who created the Multi store model
Attkinson and Shiffrin
