cognitive explanation for schiz Flashcards
1
Q
dysfunctional thinking
A
frith et al identified 2 types of dysfunctional thought processing:
- metarepresentation
- central control
- unable to filter preconscious thoughts and gives too much though to info that woud be filtered = overloads the mind = positive symptoms
2
Q
define metarepresentation
A
- the ability to reflect on thoughts and behaviours = allows us insights into our own intentions and goals
- ## failure to recognise actions and thoughts as being your own = beleif that someone else is controlling them = auditory hallucinations
3
Q
define central control
A
- schiz paitents expreience derailment of thoughts because each word triggers associations which cant be supressed = disorganised speech
- inable to supress and override automatic actions and speech = urge to open a door
4
Q
ao3 - research support
A
- stirling et al = compared the performance on a range of cognitive tasks with 30 people with and without schiz
- stroop task = name the font colours of colour words = supress the tendency to read the words aloud
- friths cental control theory = people with schiz took longer
5
Q
ao3 - only a proximal explanantion
A
- are proximal explanations because they explain what is happening right now to produce symptoms = cant explain what causes the condition such as genetics and family dysfunction
- unclear how genetic and childhood trauma may lead to problems with metarepresentation or central control
