Q

What was the aim?

A
  • To analyse the developmental pattern of the phonological loop in children aged 5-17 years old. This involved
  • To look at the decline of digit span in older people, including those with types of dementia: Alzheimer’s and fronto-temporal dementia.

Q

What was the procedure?

A
  • Participant’s were split into age groups: age 5-6, 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years.
  • P’s were tested individually in their break. Sequences of digits were read aloud, one per second.
  • Each time a participant got the sequence right, another digit was added to increase the span and the participants tried again.
  • They started with 3 sequences of 3 digits. The digit span measure was the number of digits in the sequence where they recalled at least 2 of the three sequences correctly.

Q

What were the results?

A

Digit span:

  • 5 years: 3.76
  • 6-8 years: 4.34
  • 9-11 years: 5.13
  • 12-14 years: 5.46
  • 15-17 years: 5.83

The data was compared with research done in 2010 which included 25 healthy older people were used to compare against 25 people with Alzheimer’s disease
