Cognitive Biases Flashcards
Anchoring
Staying locked onto the diagnosis made early on despite disconfirming evidence
Availability
Jumping to a diagnosis that comes to mind quickly because it is common, serious, recently encountered or otherwise noteworthy
Framing effect
Allowing the way the story is framed, whom the story came from, and where the patient is seen to influence diagnostic conclusions
Blind Obedience
Showing undue deference to authority or technology
Unpacking
Failing to elicit all relevant information in establishing a diagnosis
Confirmation
Looking for clues to support the diagnosis rather than working the outliers into the diagnosis
Diagnostic momentum
Pushing forward diagnoses from previous encounters without evaluation of their accuracy or goodness of fit with current presentation
Visceral Bias
Allowing personal feelings towards the patient influence diagnostic conclusions
Overconfidence
Believing that one knows more than one actually does or that a test/ procedure is more accurate/ effective that it actually is
