What does C.B.T do?
Fix “faulty” thinking, logically and rationally.
How long does C.B.T usually take?
20hours therapy with a therapist. Online packages are also available.
Three phases of C.B.T
Conceptualisation, skills acquisition and application, ending and follow up
What is conceptualisation?
Where the client needs to understand the nature of C.B.T. They then set goals and a treatment plan.
Skills acquisition and application
Therapist works with client on intervention techniques and teaching them new skills.
Ending and follow-up
Where the final assessment of progress takes place using sled report and questioning.
Questioning and relaxation techniques
Challenge maladaptive thoughts. Using techniques like breathing and guided imagery.
Homework assignments
They are considered essential in the therapy. It consists of reading, monitoring behaviour, feeling and actions in a diary. This helps to integrate what they have learnt into their diary lives.
Advantages of C.B.T
One of the most effective therapies for anxiety or depression. It is used for many conditions. It is a better long term option - no addiction or withdrawal symptoms. Refreshing courses available but skills learnt can help through day to day life.
Disadvantages of C.B.T
It isn’t for everyone. Can be time consuming and can take up to 6 months depending on the condition. It is not a quick fix. It is difficult to be motivated to take part in the therapy. There is always a risk that the anxiety will return.
