assumptions, expectations, and interpretations of events are responsible for negative emotions
key components of CBT
- identification of problematic thinking
- restructuring of negative thought
- or elimination of such thought
- clarification of when feelings or anxiety or panic elicit automatic responses, and learning to control these
- mastering basic skills to remain symptom free
faulty cognitions
create schemas
people are selective on evidence they focus on
key aspects of formulation
- predisposing factors: aspects which address the “why me” question. core beliefs are noted.
- precipitants: information is solicited about what was happening just before symptoms developed
- triggers: factors which activate symptoms on a regular basis.
- symptoms: psychical symptoms, thoughts, feelings, and behavior
- maintenance cycle: how all the info fits together. once the maintenance cycles have been ascertained, ways of breaking them can be considered.
