Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Davis Flashcards
What are automatic negative thoughts?
pessimistic thoughts about future outcomes:
- almost always are negative
- are overgeneralizations
- distort reality
- seem to occur spontaneously
- may barely enter awareness
- are believed to be true
- sometimes coexist with images
What is the Automatic Negative Thought Record?
- **Patient homework in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
- Record of situations that triggered automatic thoughts, what the resulting emotion was, the alternative responses, and the outcomes of the situation.
How do automatic negative thoughts with rational responses improve mood?
Decrease resulting negative emotions and physiologic responses such as stress, anxiety, increased heart rate, etc.
What are the basic principles of Cognitive Behavior Therapy?
- CBT is problem focused.
- CBT emphasizes the present with links to the past.
- CBT is time limited.
- CBT teaches skills to change negative thought patterns.
- CBT is structured and requires active homework sessions.
What are the three parts of the simple cognitive model?
- Situation/event
- Automatic thoughts
- Reaction (emotional, physiological, behavioral)
What triggers automatic negative thoughts?
- external event
- stream of thoughts
- emotion
- behavior
- sensations
How do you evaluate automatic negative thoughts?
- test its validity
- look for other interpretations
- decatastrophize the situation (worst case)
- recognize the impact it has
- get distance from it (perspective taking)
- engage problem-solving
What are rational responses?
- fit the facts
- are testable
- refute automatic negative thoughts
- reduce distress
- point toward an action plan
What are the adaptive response questions to the auto
- What is the evidence that the ANT is true?
- Is there an alternative explanation?
- What is the worse that can happen? What is the best that can happen? What is the most likely outcome?
- How does the ANT affect me?
- If a friend was in this situation, what would I tell him/her?
- What should I do?
What are the rational responses to the ANT: “I will never get all of this studying done before the exam. I am going to fail.”?
- I need to stay focused on what I can accomplish tonight.
- I have a good study plan in place.
- I can ask for help if I don’t understand something.
- I often think this way but end up doing just fine.
What are core beliefs?
- Early experiences contribute to the development of core beliefs about yourself, your world, and others. (I.e. I am incompetent, No one likes me, I am evil, etc.)
- Automatic negative thoughts are the “symptoms” or expressions of core beliefs.
