Q

What are 2 strengths of CBT?

A

Responsibility
-Patients going through CBT will develop self help techniques that they can apply this to the future
-Will feel motivated to change further than just depression
-If patients do relapse they will have learned their owns et of skills to help cope with their recovery
This is more appealing then solely relying on drugs that suppress hormones and only treat symptoms and not the cause

Symptoms/Cause
-CBT appears to treat the cause and the symptoms and the effects of CBT will remain permanent unlike drug therapies
-CBT helps the patient to understand themselves and what can trigger depressive feelings and gives them the ability and tools to help themselves whenever needed
This makes It much more preferable to drug therapies when the patient is reliant on drugs

Q

What are 2 weaknesses of CBT?

A

Responsibility
-CBT provides patients with the tools to help however, in some cases depression can be so severe patients can’t engage in the work of CBT
-May not even be able to pay attention or properly understand how to use CBT
-For patients like this antidepressants and drug therapies are more appealing than CBT and involving themselves in the course
This is a clear limitation of CBT as it can’t be used as an entire treatment for all patients and all cases of depression

Time and cost
-CBT is a talking therapy which is offered by the NHS but the waiting list is usually always years long
-Working for hours with a private professional psychologist paying them upwards of £100/session and courses can last for up to 30 sessions
Again, drug therapies can be more appealing and cheaper on the NHS fro depressed patients and faster acting
